Pain Management Services
Dr. Richard Burke is an expert in functional spine surgery and neuromodulation. Dr. Burke has explored clinical outcomes of minimally invasive percutaneous interventions to manage craniofacial pain and headache disorders to, cranial neuralgias, and many other neurological disorders.
Dr. Burke is an early adopter of neuromodulation (with over 2000 spinal cord stimulation procedures to date) and is considered a leader in the field.
He has investigated the mechanisms of action in spinal cord stimulation for the treatment of chronic pain disorders such as peripheral neuropathy, failed back surgery syndrome, and complex regional pain syndrome.
Dr. Burke hopes that his extensive experience will help determine the best treatment options for patients with neurological diseases and chronic pain disorders to optimize current treatment paradigms and understand how such functional neurosurgical treatments work in the management of these disorders.
Risk Assessment
Dr. Burke excels at risk assessment and suitability determinations, which represent approaches necessary for best practices in providing individualized, patient-centered care.
He can offer a thorough patient assessment and evaluation for treatment that includes a risk-benefit analysis.
Risk assessment involves identifying risk factors from patient history, family history, current biopsychosocial factors, and screening and diagnostic tools, including prescription drug monitoring programs, laboratory data, and other measures.
Risk stratification for a particular patient can aid in determining appropriate treatments and avoid explantation and other signs of failure for the patient.
Personalized Care
He aims to enhance neuromodulation’s effectiveness through personalized care, developing and optimizing less-invasive surgery, and testing emerging innovative treatments for patients.
Dr. Burke astutely considers the pain management needs of each special population that is confronted with unique challenges associated with acute and chronic pain, including the following: children/youth, older adults, women, pregnant women, individuals with chronic relapsing pain conditions such as sickle cell disease, racial and ethnic populations, active duty military and reserve service members, and Veterans, and patients with cancer who require palliative care.
